The beginning of the MS Center's goes back to 1957, when Professor L. van Bogaert founded the
"Belgian Study Group for Multiple Sclerosis" within the Belgian Neurological Association. This
project was undertaken to provide a consultation service for people with MS and to stimulate
scientific research on this topic.
As it developed, Dr. Ch. J. Ketelaer, in charge, realized that it would be important to have a center
that could hospitalize and treat patients, something thatwas possible after a collaboration with the study
group of the Belgian Multiple Sclerosis League and a request accepted by the Ministry of Public Health.
With this, in 1960 the first specialized hospital for the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of
people with MS and related diseases came into being.
This hospital was named "National Schiftings- en Readaptatiecentrum voor
Multiple Sclerosis vzw" (National Screening and Readaptation Center for Multiple Sclerosis),
however, in 1996 its name was changed to "National Multiple Sclerosis Center vzw", abbreviated
to NMSC.
“The National MS Centre provides comprehensive, safe, specialist clinical and integrated care
plans for people with MS and other chronic neurological disorders.”
The MS Center is committed to 4 very important aspects:
